Aida, 8 years old, lives in a flat in the Paris suburbs. The day her father returns from his trip to Senegal, the daily life of Aida and the whole family is completely turned upside down: the father has not returned alone, he is accompanied by a young Senegalese girl, Rama, whom he introduces as his second wife. Aida, sensitive to her mother's distress, decides to get rid of the newcomer.
In a working-class suburb of Dakar, the workers of a construction site, who have been without pay for months, decide to leave the country by sea for a better future. Among them is Souleiman, who leaves behind the woman he loves, Ada, who is promised to another man. A few days after the boys set sail, a fire devastates Ada's wedding party and mysterious fevers take hold of the local girls. Issa, a young policeman, begins an investigation, far from suspecting that the spirits of the drowned have returned. While some of them come to seek revenge, Souleiman has returned to say goodbye to Ada.
